readme.txt for CaretPro(tm) v1.2.1 1/12/97 ======================================= CaretPro(tm) version 1.2.1 Copyright (c)1996-97, Namba One Systems by Kimiko & Tetuso Namba All rights reserved. ======================================= 1. Introduction This is a set of utility applets for the Newton. CaretPro replaces the current caret popup keypad. In addition to the conventional keypad, CaretPro maintains configurable word lists, where you can store words or phareses you frequently use. CPeditor is an applet for editing the word lists that CaretPro uses. CPremover permanently removes word list soup. NOTE: If you currently use the version 1.2, you need to update only the CPeditor. Other applets are identical in this version. If you like these applets, please try our "Little Peking", "RepTile", "Litton", "YinYang", "PeggySu" and "Bug-O-Matic". They are freeware Newton games. 2. Distribution of This Program These applets are freeware. You are free to give them away to your friends and family members. Be sure to pass this readme file along with the applets. If you upload these applets to a BBS or FTP site, please notify us by sending email afterwards.3. Requirements These programs were tested on the MP-130 with Newton OS 2.0J (Japanese version). Reportedly, they work on German and English OSes as well. They will not run, however, on OS 1.3 or earlier. CaretPro takes up about 6KB of memory and consumes about 2KB of heap. CPeditor and CPremover need about 9KB + 2KB and 5KB + 1KB respectively.4. How to Use CaretPro A. Installation Download two packages (CaretPro.pkg and CPeditor.pkg) from your Mac (or Windows machine) to the Newton. They are very small (6KB and 9KB). If you have very little memory left on your Newton, you can install only the CaretPro but you won't be able to modify word lists. CaretPro's word lists are stored in soup. You can optinally install CPremover.pkg if you wish to delete the word list soup. B. CaretPro Popup Try CaretPro on Notepad. When you tap the caret, you see a new poup list. The popup contais two keypads and a list of 10 words. The first (top) keypad is mainly used for launching related applets. The second keypad acts like the original caret popup. The word list is a list where you store words or phrases you frequently use. C. CaretPro KeyPad 1 From left to right, you see five buttons on the keypad: Style Button: Tapping this button launches the Style applet, where you can select font, character size, style and pen size. CPeditor Button: This button launches the CPeditor, where you can edit the contents of CaretPro word lists. Date Button: This button puts today's date to current caret point. You can select either long or short date format. See the description of CPeditor below. Time Button: This button puts current time. Page Button: This button loads the other word list. CaretPro maintains two word lists, and only one of them is visible at a time. Tapping this button closes the popup up. You must tap the caret again to see the effect. D. CaretPro KeyPad 2 This keypad acts just like the original caret popup, with a few enhancements. The first row contains buttons for control characters: Carriage Return: Inserts a carriage return (CR) character. Back Delete: Deletes a character and move to the left. Space: Inserts a space character. Forward Delete: Deletes a character and move to the right. Tab: Inserts a tab character. E. CaretPro Word Lists CaretPro maintains two word lists, but only one of them is visible at a time. Each list contains up to 10 word (or phrase) entries. You can modify the contents in these lists with the CPeditor. F. CPeditor Tap the edit button (second from the left) on the top keypad, and the CPeditor appears. CPeditor displays the first item of the first list (List 1) at start-up. Select the item you want to edit by tapping the [List 1] or [List 2] button and one of ten numerical buttons. Changes to an item take effect immediately after you select another item or after you exit CPeditor. To select the date format, tap the Info button and choose "Prefs". G. CPremover Tap the trash can button to delete word list soup permanently. This operation cannot be undone, so be careful. 5.
