Newton Software

(Mac users should ignore these little boxes)

New In Version 2.1
------------------
International support - You can change the Assist word that QuickCall uses.
(read on for more information about this feature)

Fixed Bug - When you remove the package, the status bar now redraws properly.

Still no card removal - This doesn't seem too important to most people, tell
me if it is an important one to you.

Shareware - Please Pay if you Play
----------------------------------
This software is shareware. That means that it isn't free; You can use
it for 15 days to try it out. If you leave it installed in your Newton
for longer than 15 days, you have to pay for it.

During this time period, you can make copies for all of your friends,
show it at Newton user groups, and generally get to know the software.

Most people are used to good software costing money. Then there are
some people who never pay for software, shareware or otherwise. I
don't expect these people to register QuickCall. However, if you don't
register or remove it after 15 days, you are breaking the law.

Shareware relies on the honor of the Newton community to work. If you
don't register, fewer neat utilities like this one will show up.

QuickCall is priced at $10, no matter how you register. Such a deal!

How to Register
---------------
If you have CompuServe, you can do the right thing and register this
software without lifting a pen by using the command GO SWREG.

The Registration ID of this software is 3592, but you can also search
by the title of the software ("QUICKCALL").

If you prefer to write a check, you can send it to:

What you Get
------------
If you register QuickCall, I will send you the most recent version of the
software by electronic mail that may contain features not found in the
shareware release. You will also get on the mailing list for all future
updates to QuickCall, if you like.

Also, your version will be personalized with your
name! Just imagine the thrill of your own personalized Newton application!

Not Much of a Thrill?
---------------------
Okay, you also get free QuickCall technical support via electronic mail and
special offers for other Cybervision applications for the Newton.

What is it?
-----------
QuickCall is a small package that installs a small
button on the status bar of your note pad. This button
contains a graphic that looks like a tiny telephone.

When this button is clicked, it opens a pop-up menu
of the people that have entered into your call list.
Presumably, these are the people that you want to call the most,
although they may not be.

Tapping on someone's name brings up a call slip with the
person's phone number. This is exactly what you would get if
you wrote "call <so-and-so>", highlighted it, and tapped assist.

The QuickCall pop-up menu also contains an option to edit the
list of people, and to bring up a blank call slip for someone
not on the list.

What do I do with it?
---------------------
I use the Newton to keep track of lots of phone numbers.
When I wanted to find the name of a person I wanted to call,
I used to look for it in the Names application. Then I got
sick of waiting for the overview to come up.

A friend suggested I use the Assistant, and it actually did
make things a lot quicker. But now, whenever I wanted to call
someone, I wound up doing the following things:

Tapping Assist.
Tapping "Please."
Tapping "Call."
Writing the first name of the person.
Tapping "Do."
Waiting for the call slip to come up.
Tapping the diamond.
Tapping the name of the person I really meant.

ARRRRRRGGGGHHHH!

So, I wrote QuickCall. Now your favorite phone numbers
are always just a few taps away.

International Support
---------------------
Starting with version 2.1, you can "localize" your copy of
QuickCall to work with any valid assistant word that you prefer.

I did this instead of making many different versions, one for
each Newton locale.

To set the assistant word that you'd like to use, tap the QuickCall
button, tap "Edit", and then write the word that you'd like to use.
So, if your Newton understands the word "Appel," you'd write Appel
on the line, and then tap "Set Command."

Then, every time you use QuickCall, it will pass "Appel" to the
assistant, instead of the default "Call" command.

Installation
------------
QuickCall will create the button on your status bar if you
install it using any of the approved Newton package-installation
methods.

It won't clutter up your extras drawer with another icon. You
can still remove it in any of the normal ways, however.
(For those who care, it's technically a Newton auto part)

This version of QuickCall /MUST/ be installed on the Newton's
internal memory if you ever want to be able to remove your
card.

I'll fix this if three (3) different people register QuickCall.

The best e-mail address to reach me at is:

Matt_Spolin@hgsi.com

This is an Internet address, obviously. From CompuServe, use the address
">INTERNET:Matt_Spolin@hgsi.com" (don't type the quotes!) to reach me via
the CompuServe internet gateway.

My CompuServe address is 76476,3401 but I prefer to receive mail at the
above email address.

Other Apps By Matt Spolin
-------------------------
EasyBill (2.0 in beta): acts like your personal secretary. It goes through
your calendar and pulls out your billable hours, then types
up an invoice. Currently shareware ($10).

ScratchPad (2.0): Makes record-scratching sounds ala rap music
with your Newton stylus. /ALSO/ bugs the hell out of people!
Freeware. Take it on a plane!
